Global Brokerage Industry Record Growth: How Volatility Creates Opportunities in 2025

The past few years have marked a golden era for the brokerage industry. Global events like the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and ongoing trade policy tensions have driven exceptional market volatility. While these crises create stress for some, they translate into record-breaking results, a surge in new clients and robust growth for brokers. What does the current brokerage landscape look like, and how are top players capitalising on these trends?

Interactive Brokers: Leading Global Brokerage Performance

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) kicked off 2025 with remarkable results. In Q1, the company reported $1.43 billion in revenue, a 19% year-over-year increase, with strong projections for Q2 fueled by significant volatility in April. Net income reached $213 million, and earnings per share for brokers climbed to $1.94, up 20% from the previous year.

The key to IBKR’s success lies in its transaction commissions, which surged 36% to $514 million, driven by a 47% increase in stock trading volume, 25% growth in options and 16% in futures contracts.

Additionally, the company earned $770 million in interest income from client deposits and loans, plus $78 million from fees for ancillary services and settlements. Client account growth reached 32% to 3.62 million, with client assets hitting a record $573.5 billion.

IG Group: Top UK Player with Strong Long-Term Potential

IG Group is on track for a strong financial year 2025 (June 2024–May 2025). In its May 12, 2025 trading update, the company projected full-year revenues to meet or slightly exceed £1.051 billion, with adjusted profit before tax expected to reach or surpass £516.3 million. High market volatility, particularly in the second quarter (March–May 2025), boosted client activity.

The bulk of IG Group’s revenue comes from over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives, primarily contracts for difference (CFDs) on indices and forex. The company also reported growth in exchange-traded contracts. Full FY25 results will be released on July 24, 2025.

XTB: High-Growth Polish Broker Known for Transparency

XTB, a standout in the global brokerage scene, posted record revenues of 580 million zloty (approximately $153 million) in Q1 2025, a 25% increase from the previous quarter. Net profit reached 194 million zloty (approximately $51 million), maintaining the high performance seen in late 2024.

Unlike many competitors, XTB provides detailed revenue breakdowns, with over half of its income derived from CFDs on indices like the DAX, US 100 and US 500. This transparency strengthens investor trust and sets XTB apart in the brokerage industry.

Why Market Volatility Drives Brokerage Industry Success

Volatility is the lifeblood of brokerage success. Global uncertainties—ranging from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine and trade tensions—trigger sharp price swings in financial markets. These fluctuations attract both seasoned and novice investors eager to capitalise on opportunities or safeguard their portfolios.

For brokers, this translates into higher transaction volumes, boosting revenues from commissions, spreads and fees across asset classes like stocks, indices, forex and CFDs.

Today’s brokerage market thrives on more than just competitive product offerings. Transparency and service quality are critical differentiators.

XTB leads the way by providing detailed revenue breakdowns by asset class and instrument. While Interactive Brokers and IG Group also prioritise clear communication, they offer less granular detail.

All three brokers demonstrate agility in adapting to new asset classes and evolving investor demands.
